Best Books to Get Toddlers to Brush Teeth

Establishing good dental habits at an early age will pay off in the long run. Preventing cavities, tooth decay, and gum disease starts with taking care of that very first white tooth that makes its appearance. While it is necessary for parents to do all of the brushing in the beginning, the end goal is to raise a child who is independently motivated to take care of his or her teeth. By the time a child visits a dentist for the first time, they should already have an established oral hygiene routine. Reading children's books about brushing teeth can give your child just the push they need.

When Toddlers Should Have First Dental Check Up

By the time a child turns 1, or within six months of the first tooth eruption, you should take your toddler to the dentist. This is the advice of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry. By the time your child is 2, you should begin the routine of dental checkups every six months. Then around 4 years of age,  the dentist will begin doing more in-depth examinations that include taking x-rays to identify signs of cavities lurking between the teeth and in those hard-to-reach molars that have appeared. By the time kids are 5 or 6, they can expect to start losing their baby teeth and, if they're lucky, get a visit from the tooth fairy.

Tips to Get Kids to Brush Their Teeth

There are a lot of variables that play into the oral health of little kids. Some kids are more genetically prone to developing cavities than others. But there are also lots of lifestyle choices that can affect teeth. Most parents know that avoiding or minimizing intake of sugary snacks and frequent brushing can both contribute to strong, healthy pearly whites. Here are some other eye-opening facts to consider when thinking about setting a child up for longterm oral hygiene habits.

  • Dentists recommend that people brush their teeth for 2 to 3 minutes for best results. Yet most only brush an average of 45 to 70 seconds per day. Just taking a couple of extra minutes can help tremendously in removing food and plaque build up. Speaking of time devoted to brushing, people with good oral hygiene routines will spend about 38 days over the course of a lifetime brushing their teeth.
  • Tooth enamel is the hardest substance in a human's body. This substance that covers teeth is stronger than any bone and has a higher percentage of minerals than any other tissue. And yet while other tissues are reparative, tooth enamel is not. For this reason, it is extremely important to do everything to take care of this protective coating.
  • Parents should brush the first baby tooth that pokes through. Apply a tiny smear of fluoride to a soft brush and gently brush the little tooth twice a day. A small wet cloth could also be used to wipe the teeth instead of a brush. Devoting just a couple of minutes a day will go a long way in preventing tooth decay in those little baby teeth.
  • Flossing is important from the time two teeth are touching. About one third of teeth are buried in the gums. Flossing helps keep the gums healthy and strong, and in turn is beneficial for the teeth that lie beneath. Also, remember that flossing covers about 40% of the tooth surface, so don't skip out on this important step.
