"Outside of a book, a dog is a man's best friend. Inside of a dog, it's too dark to read." -Groucho Marx
"There is more treasure in books than in all the pirates' loot on Treasure Island and best of all, you can enjoy these riches every day of your life." -Walt Disney
"When I say to a parent "read to a child", I don't want it to sound like medicine. I want it to sound like chocolate." -Mem Fox
"To learn to read is to light a fire; every syllable that is spelled out is a spark." -Victor Hugo, Les Miserables
"Reading is important, because if you can read, you can learn anything about everything and everything about anything." -Tomie dePaola
“A good book has no ending.” -Robert Frost
"You can find magic wherever you look. Sit back and relax, all you need is a book." -Dr. Seuss
"A book is a dream that you hold in your hand." -Neil Gaiman
“You can never get a cup of tea large enough or a book long enough to suit me.” -C.S. Lewis
“Never trust anyone who has not brought a book with them.” -Lemony Snicket
“Good friends, good books, and a sleepy conscience: this is the ideal life.” -Mark Twain
Chrysanthemum: Chrysanthemum loved her name . . . until she went to school. "I'm named after my grandmother", said Victoria. "You're named after a flower". Chrysanthemum wilted. Nothing got any better--until the students met their music teacher, Mrs. Delphinium Twinkle.
The Witchling's Wish: Little Witchling lives alone on her mountain top, and more than anything else, she wishes for a friend. When her spell book tells her that the secret ingredient to conjuring a friend is the fur from a little girl's favorite teddy bear, she knows what she must do. But the bear belongs to Lily, who can't bear to part with him. Will the Little Witchling give up her dream of a real friend? Or maybe there's a way for her and Lily to make the wish come true together . . .With heartwarming rhyming text from Lu Fraser, and beautiful illustrations from Sarah Massini, this magical friendship story is perfect for little witches everywhere!
Little Red and the Very Hungry Lion: A fun take on Little Red Riding Hood -- with a safari twist! Little Red is on her way to visit Auntie Rosie with a basket of goodies and some spot medicine. Along the way she meets the Very Hungry Lion. The Lion is eager to gobble up Little Red. The Lion's plan doesn't work out the way he wanted. Little Red and the Very Hungry Lion is a fractured fairy tale version of Little Red Riding Hood. It's a classic fairy tale with a safari twist! Alex T. Smith's fun, bold art brings Little Red Riding Hood to life in a refreshing new way that will delight young readers.
Hattie and Hudson: Hattie McFadden is a born explorer. Every morning she paddles out in her canoe to discover something new on the lake, singing a little song along the way. When her singing lures a huge mysterious beast from the depths of the lake, everyone in town is terrified—except Hattie, who looks into the creature’s friendly, curious eyes and knows that this is no monster. She befriends the giant and names him Hudson. But how can she make the frightened, hostile townspeople see that he isn’t scary or dangerous at all? Chris Van Dusen brings his colorful, perspective-bending artwork to this satisfying story about acceptance, friendship, and sticking up for those who are different.
The Best Story: The best story is one that comes from the heart. The library is having a contest for the best story, and the quirky narrator of this book just has to win that rollercoaster ride with her favorite author! But what makes a story the best? Her brother Tim says the best stories have lots of action. Her father thinks the best stories are the funniest. And Aunt Jane tells her that the best stories have to make people cry. A story that does all these things doesn't seem quite right, though, and the one thing the whole family can agree on is that the best story has to be your own. Anne Wilsdorf's hilarious illustrations perfectly capture this colorful family and their outrageous stories in Eileen Spinelli's heartfelt tale about creativity and finding your own voice.
Nadia, The Girl Who Couldn't Sit Still: In this first-ever illustrated picture book biography of the famous gymnast Nadia, debut author Karlin Gray traces Nadia Comaneci's journey from a small-town Romanian girl who did cartwheels in the schoolyard to five-time Olympic Gold Medalist and one of the most talented and respected athletes in the world.
The Tea Party in the Woods: Kikko sets out after her father with a forgotten pie for Grandma. When she arrives at a strange house in the wintry woods, a peek in the window reveals that the footprints Kikko had been following did not belong to her father at all, but to a bear in a long coat and hat! Alice in Wonderland meets Little Red Riding Hood in this charmed tale.
Stand Tall, Molly Lou Melon: Molly Lou Melon is short and clumsy, has buck teeth, and has a voice that sounds like a bullfrog being squeezed by a boa constrictor. She doesn't mind. Her grandmother has always told her to walk proud, smile big, and sing loud, and she takes that advice to heart.
Lizzy and the Cloud: It's a little out of fashion to buy a pet cloud, but Lizzy doesn't mind. She's not looking for a big one or a fancy one, just one that's right for her. And she finds it in Milo. Soon, she's taking Milo out on walks with her family, watering Milo right on schedule, and seeing Milo grow and grow. But what happens when her pet cloud gets too big for Lizzy to handle?
