Fantastic Basketball Facts for Kids

The game of basketball evolved over time as the popularity of the sport took off. What began as the brainchild of a gym teacher to keep kids entertained and out of trouble has developed into an international sports phenomenon. For inquiring minds, here are some interesting facts about the backstory of the game.

  • The original game was played with peach baskets and a soccer ball. In 1900, string baskets with backboards were finally developed to keep spectators from interfering with the game.
  • When the game was first invented, dribbling was not allowed. Players had to advance the ball down the court by passing only. In 1897, Yale introduced a new rule that allowed a single dribble.
  • It wasn't until 1961 that three-point shots were incorporated by the American Basketball League. The first three pointer was made in the National Basketball League in 1979.
  • Basketball became an Olympic event in 1936.
  • The NBA first adopted the 24-second shot clock in 1954.
